The Occupational Safety Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) establishes institutional requirements for the prevention of workplace injuries and the promotion of safe work practices across campus operations. The program is administered by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to support safe working conditions for employees, students, contractors, and other personnel engaged in University activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The program applies to personnel working in office environments, laboratories, shops, maintenance operations, construction-related activities, and other areas where physical tasks, equipment use, or workplace conditions may present injury risks. This includes University personnel as well as contractors and subcontractors performing work on University property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Covered hazards include machinery and powered equipment operation, electrical hazards, fall hazards, confined space entry, material handling, hot work activities, hazardous chemical handling in non-laboratory environments, and general workplace safety conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
EHS provides training, consultation, and program support to reduce workplace injury risks and improve safe work practices. Program functions include safety training coordination, hazard identification, workplace inspections, contractor and subcontractor safety coordination, PPE program implementation guidance, office ergonomics awareness, incident prevention support, and general occupational safety consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
