The program is administered by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and is designed to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state occupational health and safety requirements while supporting safe and effective academic and research operations.

This program applies to all faculty, researchers, students, laboratory personnel, and support staff who work with or around hazardous chemicals, including those used in laboratories, shops, and equipment operations. Hazardous chemicals include a broad range of substances such as carcinogens, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, corrosives, irritants, sensitizers, and agents that may affect the lungs, skin, eyes, or other target organs.

Chemical safety at UMES is implemented through a structured set of institutional controls and resources, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) system, and the overview of chemical operations across campus. These components define required safe work practices, ensure access to hazard information, and support institutional awareness of chemical use locations and associated risks.

Additional resources, including the Chemical Hygiene Plan, SDS database, and related safety policies, are available through the links provided on this page.

Chemical Storage Guidance

Chemical Waste Management Guidance

GHS Hazard symbols InFOgraphic

Request Forms and Checklists

Safety Plans and MaNUals

SDS database

Training

The Chemical Safety Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) establishes the framework for the safe management of hazardous chemicals in teaching, research, clinical, laboratory, shop, and other work environments where chemicals are used or stored.
