SUMMER LOAN APPLICATION PROCESS/GUIDELINES
A student may apply to borrow Stafford loans for the summer if they did not borrow their maximum annual Stafford loan amount for the preceding semesters (Fall 2015/Spring 2016). Check out the first page of the Summer Loan Request Form for step-by-step instructions on how to determine if you have any remaining loan eligibility. If a student is unsure of their Stafford Loan amount(s) awarded for the preceding semesters, they should view them on their MyUMES HawkWeb Student Center prior to submitting a Summer Loan Request Form. First time Direct Loan borrowers at UMES are required to complete their online Loan Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note once the summer loan has been originated by the University.
If the student has exhausted their maximum annual Stafford loan amounts, there are a few other loan options available that are listed below:
Parents of dependent students may choose to apply for a Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS). To apply, the parent must go online to www.studentloans.gov
and use their own FSA ID to log in and apply (making sure you list the loan period start date as 6/1/16 and end date of 8/7/16).
- Students may also apply for private educational loans (alternative loans) to assist with the cost of Summer enrollment. The University does not endorse any specific lenders. Borrowers and co-borrowers are encouraged to carefully review all alternative loan conditions before selecting this option.
PRIOR to submitting a Summer Loan Request Form, a student must complete the following:
- A Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current academic year (2015-2016),
- Register for a minimum of 6 summer credit hours TOTAL
- Have remaining annual loan funds available (see information above).
