{"id":1213,"date":"2021-06-22T11:23:54","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T15:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/deptsitetemplate\/?page_id=1213"},"modified":"2021-09-25T11:10:39","modified_gmt":"2021-09-25T15:10:39","slug":"department-site-template-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.umes.edu\/gis\/","title":{"rendered":"Geospatial Information Technology Laboratory"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) are comprised of three major technologies; Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote Sensing (RS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GIS is a powerful tool used for storing, displaying,&nbsp;and analyzing spatial data.&nbsp; This tool is used in many applications such as: land use planning, natural resource management, global change analysis, environmental assessment and planning,&nbsp; precision agriculture, emergency vehicle dispatch, demographic and overpopulation research, spread of disease, utilities planning, weather forecasting, and many business applications<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GPS receives signals from satellites to determine your location on the Earth, and is used for data collection and navigation. &nbsp;Onstar<sup>\u00a9<\/sup>&nbsp;uses GPS receivers in the vehicles in order to locate the vehicles.&nbsp; GPS receivers can also be found in your cell phone and is activated when 911 is dialed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RS uses many sensors including spectral, laser, and sonar to map the surface of the Earth.&nbsp; Satellite and aerial imagery is commonly used in many online mapping systems, such as GoogleEarth<sup>\u00a9<\/sup>, MapQuest<sup>\u00a9<\/sup>, and Yahoo Maps<sup>\u00a9<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our brand new facility is located in the Crop Research &amp; Aquaculture Building.&nbsp; The GeoTech lab houses new computer workstations, a large format printer, GPS units, and a large format digitizer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) are comprised of three major technologies; Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Remote Sensing (RS).
