Greetings! On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management, I am delighted that your student has chosen the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) for their educational needs. By doing so, they have become part of our community of scholars and Hawk Nation. I understand sending a student off to college is not always easy; however, you should know the academic success and holistic development of your student are our primary goals. The Division of Student Affairs exists to serve your students needs from orientation to graduation. Within our community, your student will find many new experiences and challenges that will not only foster their growth and development, but also test their intellectual and creative limits, both within and beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
As Vice President, I believe it is a fundamental purpose of higher education to help young men and women mature and develop into sound independent thinkers; therefore, over the coming years I hope we can establish a relationship that facilitates your student achieving this goal. However, it is important to note that there may come a time, due to a federal law - Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), when I may be prohibited from discussing with you certain educational issues regarding your student, without their written permission. It is during this time that I will encourage a dialogue between you and your student. Despite this limitation, I am here to help you and your student get the most out of their experience at UMES. My team serves as advocates and primary points of contact when either you or your student has questions or concerns.
Our richly diverse student body and faculty contribute to a community of scholars that will prepare your student to live, work, and succeed in a global society. In addition, we offer a broad range of co-curricular programs and educational opportunities that integrate instruction with field-based learning, research and service.
As an engaged parent, I invite you to join our Parent Association at "parents.html" and learn more about the role you can play in helping us shape your students education. As member of the Parent Association, you will discover what is so exciting and dynamic about our university. Again, welcome to the UMES community. We are grateful for the privilege of being a part of your students developmental experience.
Dr. D. Jason DeSousa
Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management
