The curriculum integrates mathematics, science, and engineering fundamentals with coursework in construction methods, materials, sustainability, safety, cost analysis, and project management. The program emphasizes innovation, ethical practice, and leadership to develop technically-proficient, industry-ready professionals capable of leading complex construction projects in both public and private sectors. Graduates are well-prepared to meet evolving demands and contribute to advancement and innovation in the construction industry.

Construction Engineering Curriculum (For Students Enrolling at UMES in Fall 2026)

Construction Engineering Flowchart (For Students Enrolling at UMES in Fall 2026)

Departmental Requirements

Students must complete 120 semester hours of designated coursework, including a supervised internship in the construction industry. A minimum grade of “C” must be achieved in prerequisite courses, major core courses, supportive courses, technical elective courses, and selected general education courses. Course requirements other than those listed should be selected in consultation with the advisor or Department Chairperson.

Career Opportunities

B.S. in Construction Engineering program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore prepares students for careers in industries such as construction, infrastructure, transportation, environmental engineering, and water resources engineering and management. These graduates will be qualified for entry-level to mid-level roles in private firms, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, driven by the sustained demand for construction engineers across Maryland and the broader region.

Program Educational Objectives

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is designed to prepare graduates for successful careers in construction engineering by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to address real-world engineering challenges. The Construction Engineering program produces graduates who are expected to achieve the following educational objectives within a few years after graduation:

Objective 1: Demonstrate technical competence as construction engineers in industry and government agencies or through the pursuit of advanced studies.

Objective 2: Collaborate effectively on engineering project teams in industry or government settings.

Objective 3: Contribute meaningfully as active and responsible professionals to the construction engineering field and its interaction with global society.

Objective 4: Engage in lifelong learning by continuously updating skills and knowledge to stay current with emerging tools, technologies, and best practices in Construction Engineering.

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering program will demonstrate the following learning outcomes:

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Required Courses

All students are expected to complete a common body of academic coursework. The General Education Requirements are designed to promote the development of a comprehensive educational base that will effectively support a student’s choice of major concentration. MATH 099 does not meet the General Education Requirement and does not apply toward graduation requirements.
