Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee

  • Welcome to the home for the 2020 Eastern Shore Regional Spelling Bee!

Two dozen of the Lower Shore’s best spellers convene at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday, March 7, for a regional competition where the winner will qualify for the 2020 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Maryland Eastern Shore Regional Spelling begins at 10 a.m. in the Ella Fitzgerald Center for the Performing Arts (#2 on the map below) on the UMES campus. Alexis Brown (Somerset Intermediate), Kaitlyn Danielraj (Wicomico Day) and Aaron Zheng (Pinehurst Elementary) will be competing for the second year in a row.

UMES has sponsored the free event annually since 2013. The winner gets a keepsake medallion and receives an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in late May to compete with top spellers from across the country.

Spellers are asked to arrive at 8:30 and wait inside The Hive (AKA Spellers' Room) to hear instructions and rules -- and ask questions.

The public is invited to join school champions on the first Saturday in March, when we identify the Lower Shore's top speller, who wins a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington this spring.
