Mission Statement
The Hawks Corner Center for Community Engagement at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore connects the university with communities, employers, civic organizations, and regional partners to advance meaningful civic and community engagement while strengthening economic and workforce development across the Eastern Shore and beyond.
Through collaborative partnerships, experiential learning, civic engagement, workforce initiatives, and community-based problem solving, the Center creates opportunities for students and community members to develop the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to contribute to thriving communities and a strong regional workforce. The Center prepares Hawks to become engaged citizens, career-ready professionals, and community leaders who apply their education to address community needs and create positive, sustainable impact.
Vision Statement
The Hawks Corner Center for Community Engagement envisions an Eastern Shore where an engaged university and an empowered community work together to build stronger communities, expand economic opportunity, and develop a skilled and adaptable workforce.
The Center aspires to serve as a leading university-community hub where civic engagement, education, workforce development, and economic development intersect, creating meaningful pathways between the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and the communities it serves.
Core Purpose
Established in 2013, the Hawks Corner Center for Community Engagement was created to provide the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a physical footprint in the Town of Princess Anne and to strengthen the University’s presence, relationships, and engagement within the local community. The Center serves as a connector, participant, and initiator in community engagement, fostering meaningful relationships between UMES and the Town of Princess Anne, Somerset County, and the broader Eastern Shore.
The Center serves as a connector, convener, and catalyst for university-community partnerships by:
- Engaging students and community members in meaningful civic and community activities.
- Connecting academic learning and student experiences with community, workforce, and regional economic needs.
- Empowering students and community members with knowledge, skills, relationships, and opportunities that support personal, professional, and community success.
- Building stronger communities and a more prepared, resilient, and competitive regional workforce through collaboration and shared investment.
- Initiating partnerships, programs, and conversations that respond to emerging community needs and opportunities across the Eastern Shore.
- Participating as an active university partner in the civic, cultural, educational, and economic life of Princess Anne and the broader Eastern Shore.
