Fire and Life Safety

The Fire and Life Safety Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) establishes institutional requirements for fire prevention, life safety compliance, and fire risk management across campus facilities. The program is administered by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to support compliance with applicable fire safety codes, standards, and institutional requirements.

EHS is responsible for managing fire and life safety compliance activities across the University, including fire safety education and training, inspections of campus buildings and public assembly spaces as well as the coordination of inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire and life safety systems. These systems include fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, and emergency generators. EHS also provides guidance on general fire and life safety concerns across campus operations. EHS is responsible for conducting fire drills for residential buildings and the daycare center as required by the State of Maryland.
