Universities present diverse work environments, especially research settings where both routine workplace hazards and hazards related to novel research activities must be identified, evaluated, and controlled. These varied environments create unique challenges for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. As such, UMES requires that employees, students, and authorized visitors to utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when hazards cannot be eliminated through engineering or administrative controls.
PPE requirements vary by activity, location, and hazard assessment. Departments, supervisors, laboratory managers, and principal investigators are responsible for identifying task-specific PPE requirements with support from EHS. As part of this program, EHS provides PPE training to UMES employees which covers topics such as: physical hazards, how to perform hazard assessments to identify if PPE is required, proper selection and use of PPE, and documentation of this information. Additional information regarding PPE training and other EHS training offers can be found in the training guide.
The goal of the PPE Program is to reduce the risk of injury and exposure associated with identified hazards by providing individuals with the knowledge, skills, and equipment necessary to perform their duties safely. Through effective hazard assessment, PPE management, and employee training, UMES strives to protect the health and safety of its campus community, safeguard the environment, and maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
