This guidance is necessary in maintaining the safety of our campus community. ANSI Z358.1 require that weekly flushing of emergency eyewash and safety shower stations is performed. EHS office does conduct monthly inspections to verify that the weekly flushing is performed, and an annual test includes but not limited to verification of flow rate, spray patterns, and temperature. However due to the existing EHS staffing levels and the number of stations on campus prevent EHS from performing weekly flushing of every station, hence it is crucial that Lab Managers and/or Principal Investigators carry out this weekly task.
A date card should be attached to the station, which is filled out by EHS personnel for annual inspections. It is highly recommended that the Lab Managers and/or Principal Investigator document the weekly flushing that includes date of flushing activities and who conducted flushing activities.
To perform the test, follow these set of instructions.
- Visually inspect for cleanliness, damage, or obstructions.
- Make sure eyewash is positioned over a drain or sink. If eyewash has a drench hose then lift the hose and spray directly down the sink.
- Push the activation device until water flows, which should pop off the dust covers, and let the water continue to flow until it runs clear for 5 seconds.
- If the shower is not positioned over a drain, then need to use a safety shower test kit.
- Activate the shower with the pull rod, let the water continue to flow until it runs clear for 5 seconds.
If there are problems notate them and submit a work order request through Physical Plant. If there are additional questions or concerns, contact EHS office.
