Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides this guidance to assist University personnel in the proper identification, handling, storage, and disposal of universal wastes generated on University property. Universal wastes are common hazardous wastes that are regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) due to the potential environmental and health hazards associated with their components. Proper management of universal waste helps prevent releases of hazardous materials, ensures compliance with federal and state requirements, and promotes responsible waste management practices.
Universal wastes must be collected, stored, labeled, and disposed of through approved University procedures. Employees should not place universal wastes in general trash, recycling containers, or other non-designated waste streams.
