The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) equips students with the knowledge and skills to analyze, design, and construct infrastructure systems that support the needs of modern society. The curriculum integrates mathematics, science, and engineering principles with core coursework in structural, transportation, geotechnical, environmental, and water resources engineering. The program prepares a diverse and skilled workforce for professional licensure, graduate study, and careers in both public and private sectors, addressing real-world challenges and contributing to the advancement of infrastructure, sustainability, and community development.
Students must complete 120 semester hours of designated coursework, including a supervised internship in the construction industry. A minimum grade of “C” must be achieved in prerequisite courses, major core courses, supportive courses, technical elective courses, and selected general education courses. Course requirements other than those listed should be selected in consultation with the advisor or Department Chairperson.

B.S. in Civil Engineering degree program prepares students for technical roles in the planning, design, and analysis of civil and infrastructure systems. Career paths include civil, structural, transportation, geotechnical, and environmental or water resources engineering. In these roles, graduates will be qualified to design and evaluate structures, transportation networks, foundations, and water systems to support the development and maintenance of public and private infrastructure.

All students are expected to complete a common body of academic coursework. The General Education Requirements are designed to promote the development of a comprehensive educational base that will effectively support a student’s choice of major concentration. MATH 099 does not meet the General Education Requirement and does not apply toward graduation requirements. If a student needs MATH 099, he/she must take it before MATH 109, MATH 110, MATH 111, and MATH 112.
