How six semesters of science, skills, and mentored research prepare students for the clinical year.
Pre-Clinical Education
The first two years of the UMES SVM curriculum — six semesters run across Summer, Fall, and Spring terms — build the scientific, diagnostic, and professional foundation every DVM student needs before entering the clinical year. Instruction combines large-group lecture, team-based learning, and hands-on laboratory work, with digital learning and immersive technologies incorporated throughout as the primary method of content delivery matures over time.
The pre-clinical science sequence moves systematically from foundational vocabulary and normal structure/function (Semester 1) through a full, systems-based study of anatomy, physiology, and pathology across all major body systems (Semesters 2–3, via the paired Healthy Animals and Systemic/Clinical Pathology courses), into the infectious disease agents, toxicology, and introductory surgical principles of Semester 4, and finally into species-specific clinical medicine and surgery across small animal, food animal, and equine practice in Semesters 5 and 6.
Running in parallel with the science curriculum are six-semester skill-building threads: Clinical Skills I–VI takes students from basic animal handling and physical examination through suturing, injections, phlebotomy, anesthesia assistance, and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on live animals, models, and simulators; Personal & Professional Skills I–VI builds client communication (including the Calgary–Cambridge model), financial literacy, leadership, and wellbeing; Clinical Reasoning I–V uses small-group, case-based learning and the SOAP framework to build diagnostic thinking; and Evidence-Based Veterinary Medicine and Research I–III carries students from research fundamentals through a mentored, faculty-guided research project presented at the school’s Annual Research Day. The One Health I–III sequence threads the human–animal–environment connection through professional foundations, epidemiology and biostatistics, and zoonotic/transboundary disease.
Students select pre-clinical electives beginning in Semester 4, with options spanning oncology, wildlife and zoological medicine, behavior, nutrition, canine rehabilitation, advanced equine diagnostics and lameness, large-animal ambulatory and mixed-animal practice, food animal and poultry medicine, herd and population medicine, veterinary emergency and disaster management, alternative medicine, entrepreneurship, legislative advocacy, and mentored research. Business-casual dress is the expected standard of professional presentation throughout the pre-clinical years. In the final two pre-clinical semesters, Introduction to Clinical Year I & II and Introduction to Practice Management I & II directly prepare students for the transition into Year 3 — covering rotation scheduling, policy, and expectations alongside the business fundamentals of veterinary practice.
